Across the world Miss World National Finals are taking place as we count down the days to Miss World 2014. Thousands of hopefuls are competing for the chance to represent their nation on the global stage. On their journey they have raised huge amounts of funds for various causes, all under the banner of ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.

Today we have a look at the work of the Miss Wales Organisation, and what they have achieved in the lead up to their Final this Saturday.

Beauty with a Purpose in Wales

There has been a huge commitment to ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ once again this year. The finalists have used their imaginations to devise creative ways to raise money, and taken part in a wide array of activities, from taking part in empowerment programmes to campaigning for the end of violence towards women.

The fundraising efforts of the Miss World Wales organisation are something to be very proud of. At the 2009 Miss Wales final, in front of 1000 strong crowd at the Cardiff International Arena, it was announced that the 54 young Welsh women who took part in the event had raised more than £120,000 under the banner of Beauty with a Purpose.

Charitable donations by the Miss Wales competition include:

2005 - £7,000

2006 - £14,500

2007- £55,000

2008 - £75,000

2009 - £120,000

2010 - £60,000

2011 - £90,000

2012 - £42,000

This year 40 finalists will be taking part in the Miss Wales 2014 competition and each and every one of them has been taking part in fundraising activities.

Finalist Chanelle Heron raised funds during a popular Friday night boxing event, with donations, % of ticket money and a raffle draw going towards the funds raised.

Shannon Hicks took the plunge and went on a charity Skydive.

Lowri Byrne braved the ski slopes of Austria and took part in a Sponsored Dress Ski, braving the elements in aid of charity.

There are many more excellent examples of fundraising efforts in Wales and each of the contestants has done a great job. With still a few more events to come we don’t have a final tally of the amount raised, but we will find out on Saturday after the Grand Final.

This year Beauty with a Purpose will donate the funds raised in Wales to the Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre, a place which has received funds from Miss Wales in the past. Last year the contestants raised over £40,000 and these vital funds ensured that the centre could continue to provide the necessary care to the children within its care.

A Message from Bobath

"With over 21 years of experience, Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales was started by families for families. We provide children, from birth to 18, who have cerebral palsy with specialist Bobath therapy with the aim of improving their quality of life through increased function and well-being. Uniquely, the therapy that we provide is transdiciplinary, with Bobath trained physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech & language therapists working together to look at the individual needs of each child. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to a baby or young child’s brain and can affect movement, sensation, perception, cognition, communication and eating and drinking.

On behalf of everyone at Bobath Wales I would like to extend huge thanks to all of the Miss Wales contestants, their sponsors, family and friends not only for raising such an amazing amount of money in the run up to the final but also for raising vital awareness of cerebral palsy and of Bobath therapy right across Wales."

Centre Director, Bobath Children’s Therapy Centre Wales.

We congratulate all of the contestants and staff who have worked hard this year raising funds for Beauty with a Purpose, and we wish them luck and hope for every success for Saturday’s Final!
